Chatbots vs. AI agents
One talks. One can actually do things. Learn the difference. Finish the quick check to earn the Agent Spotter badge.
Mission goal
Know the difference between a chatbot and an AI agent, and why agents need a good boss.
A chatbot talks
A chatbot is AI you have a conversation with. You type, it answers. It can explain, brainstorm and write, but it doesn't change anything outside the chat.
An agent does things
An AI agent can use tools. It can open files, write code, run programs, check its own work and report back. This website was built by AI agents: Claude built the site and Codex built the Boone Clicker game.
Agents need a boss
Because agents can actually change things, they need someone in charge who decides what to build, checks the result and says when it's done. That's you. The AI is your crew, and you're the mission commander.
- You decide the goal
- The agent makes a plan and does the work
- You check it and decide if it ships
Try it: chatbot or agent?
For each job, decide if a chatbot is enough or you'd want an agent: "Explain how volcanoes work" (chatbot). "Change the color of every button on my website" (agent). "Give me 10 names for my dog game" (chatbot). "Fix the bug in my game files and test it" (agent).
